  • There needs to be a better way to describe Adrian Tchaikovsky books than “It’s spiders and octopuses in space but look it’s really really good” because that’s not working for me.

  • 📚 The Ferryman by Justin Cronin

I finished Justin Cronin’s latest, The Ferryman, and really enjoyed it. The Passage will always be my favorite but this is a tight and really enjoyable story as well. And there are some 🔥 quotes in it:

The mind works wondrously; it is capable of astonishing feats. It is the only machine in nature capable of thinking one thing while knowing its opposite.

    And:

I was no fan of the S3. Every society produces such men: the ones who dwell in the shadows, who live on suspicion, whose project in life is to tighten the air in every room one notch, just by breathing it.

  • I love long books but I’m also afraid of them. This post has some great tips, like this one:

Your relationship with the book extends to aesthetics. Finding an edition you appreciate can make the experience more enjoyable. Consider font size, page quality, and even the cover art. Old copies of books are often fun to display on a shelf, but tend to make for poor reading experiences.

  • Tony Fedell on the two things that matter in our careers

I just finished Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making by Tony Fedell and the ending legit made me tear up:

In the end, there are two things that matter: products and people. What you build and who you build it with. The things you make—the ideas you chase and the ideas that chase you—will ultimately define your career. And the people you chase them with may define your life.

I got a little uncomfortable with some of the “hustle culture” bits in the book. But taken as a whole, this is wonderful read about having a meaningful career and life. Highly recommended.

  • 📚 I finished Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin this morning. It deserves every one of the many placements it got on 2022 year-end lists. My favorite book I’ve read in a long time. And I love this reminder as we start the new year:

There is a time for any fledgling artist where one’s taste exceeds one’s abilities. The only way to get through this period is to make things anyway.
